Placenta Plans

After your baby is born you have the right to choose what happens with your placenta. There is no right or wrong answer. We currently have 3 options available in house for you to choose from, but the options are endless.

Dispose of it

This option is if you do not want to keep your placenta or do anything special with it. If this is your choice we will put your placenta into a biohazard bag and put it in our placenta freezer where it will stay until the bio-hazardous waste company comes to empty the freezer, they will then incinerate any placentas collected.

Encapsulate it

This option is available through DFWCBW. If this is your choice we will bag up your placenta and place it in our placenta fridge and Taylor will pick up your placenta from our birth center, she will then reach out to you directly to arrange pickup or you can have someone pick your capsules up for you from the birth center.

The cost for having your placenta encapsulated by Taylor through DFWCBW is $300, with colored placenta prints available upon request at no additional charge.

Donate it

We have recently connected with a sports medicine company called Tricelx. This company uses parts of the umbilical cord and the placenta itself to help treat traumatic brain injuries for our military veterans.

There is no cost associated with this donation, you only need to sign some consent forms allowing them to collect and use your placenta. If this is your choice we will put your placenta in a cooler they have provided for us and after you have been discharged to go home (or we have left your home) we call them and they come pick it and your consent forms up and do their research.

Other Options

If you do not want to do any of the options already listed you are also welcome to come up with your own plans. Some people want to take their placenta home and bury it under a tree. Some want to have their doula or a third party agency encapsulate their placenta for them. The possibilities are endless!

Any of these are perfectly fine and all you have to do is sign the release form and follow any instructions you may have been given by a third party (if there is one).

If you are unsure about encapsulating your placenta or another form of placentophagy this podcast episode from Evidence Based Birth can provide you with more information.
