Prodromal & Early Labor
Prodromal labor IS labor that starts and stops before fully active labor begins. It’s often called “false labor,” but this is a poor description. Medical professionals recognize that the contractions are real, but they come and go and labor may not progress. Although strong and sometimes rhythmic these contractions do not cause significant change in the cervix, such as dilation or effacement. Prodromal labor is really common and can start days, weeks, or even a month or more before active labor begins.
What causes prodromal labor?
There are several theories as to what causes prodromal labor, some thing include your baby being in a less than optimal position, uneven pelvis, or history of previous pregnancy (irritable uterus).
What you can do: (also helpful in Early Labor - you won’t sleep through Active Labor!)
Rest, if you have a break in your contractions seize this opportunity to rest and recover from the hard work you've been doing.
Take something to help you sleep, such as melatonin, Benadryl, Unisom, or a Tylenol PM. **Please take only 1 of these at the recommended dosage**
Try resting in positions that may help your baby get into a better position, such as the Miles Circuit.
Get a chiropractic adjustment and/or prenatal massage.
Take magnesium, up to 2,000mg is safe.
Sitting on a birth ball and doing hip rotations
Take a warm bath with Epsom salts
Keep your bladder empty and stay well hydrated (liquid IV or other electrolyte drinks work great!), and make sure you are nourishing your body with healthy protein rich foods.
These positions can help with Early Labor as well as Prodromal Labor
We encourage you to rest during this phase as much as you can. If you are feeling stir crazy try these positions but don’t overdue it. You want to preserve your energy for active labor.
We know this can be both physically and emotionally exhausting, trust that your sweet baby will be in your arms before you know it!
